Tri-Theory Project
In class we discuss how to use a variety of shapes, space, and line to create an abstract dynamic composition. We demonstrate how to create a design that forces the eye to travel around the entire picture. Students brainstorm and "doodle" designs using rulers and french curves as well as freehand drawing on sketch paper. Student's then transfer their shapes and designs onto 12x24 paint paper. The design is divided into three equal parts. Each third should correctly reflect the definition of what each learned theory is. Analogous, Complementary and Monochromatic
Mandala Wheel
It is intriguing to observe the art of many cultures and find parallels. One design format that is found across many cultures, often created with a similar purpose, is the circular type of design called “Mandala” in Sanskrit. Similar designs are created in Navajo sand paintings and basketry, in Islamic mosaics, circular Celtic knot designs, and in many types of art from other cultures. “Mandala” means “healing circle” or “whole world”. In many cultures, this circular design is used to express what is believed to be the oneness of all creation or the endless repeating of the life cycle. The designs in mandalas, or similar works from other cultures, are arranged around a center point. The line of symmetry, where the design repeats in a mirror image, can cross the midpoint at equal intervals in infinite numbers. Because the design radiated out along an axis from a center point, this is called “radial symmetry”.
Tapestry weaving
Students will complete a tapestry using Tabby, Soumak, Egyptian Knot, Dovetail, Interlocking, and vertical stripes weaving techniques. Students will use the above techniques in a variety of ways and combinations to create a colorful design and pattern. We will discuss the textile industry and fabric making throughout history and other cultures.
Color Wheel
Students will learn about the color spectrum using and creating a color wheel. They will also learn other vocabulary that applies when using and discussing color and combinations of.
Caricature Mugs
Students learn the basics of handbuilding with clay. Using additive method and coiling a cylinder is built and smoothed. Students learn what a caricature is. The difference between exaggerated expression and unrealistic stylization is explained as the key defining point. Students choose an expression and character to create. Cylinders go through a metamorphosis and turn into the caricature of the students' choosing.
HELLO!! Projects are listed in order of what we are currently working on!
Two Point Perspective City
Students have been learning how to create architecture using the two point perspective formula. They have learned about the reasons and functions behind architectural choices throughout time and cultures. Did you know that the reason for the curly points on the corners of Chinese pagodas was to lead evil spirits from the home? Ask them about their choices for the city they are developing.
3D superhero!

The above is a link to the website that we will use in class to help with our superhero concept. While we want our superhero to be original in idea and design the site helps with drawing various details simply using contour. Below is a survey to get students thinking about the definition of what we consider to be a superhero.
The rubric download is for the short one page story they will write to support their superhero concept.
